Why rodent proofing
Rodents only need a gap smaller than an inch
Norway rats and roof rats are both at home in the Puget Sound region, and our mild, wet winters push them indoors looking for dry shelter. Vents and chimney pipes are the usual way in, and larger animals will chew or claw through weak spots on the outside of your home.
Once inside, rats and mice nest in insulation, chew wiring and leave droppings that can spread disease. Identifying every place they get in is the first step to getting rid of them for good. That's where our inspection starts.

Know the signs
Signs of a rodent infestation
You may never see them, but rodents leave plenty of evidence. If you notice any of these, book an inspection.
Droppings
Even if you don't see rodents, you'll find what they leave behind along joists, insulation and storage boxes.
Chewed wires & wood
Rats and mice chew insulation, electrical wiring and framing, which can create a fire hazard.
Noises at night
Scratching, scraping and thumping in the attic or walls, usually after dark.
Damaged insulation
Tunnels, nests and flattened patches in the insulation overhead.
Musty or foul odors
A stale, ammonia-like smell from urine, nesting material or a dead animal.

When we rodent-proof, we seal the structure: every point of entry in the attic, on the roof, in the crawl space and all the way around the property, using materials rodents cannot chew through.
- Inspect every level of the home for entry points and activity
- Seal openings with steel mesh, sheet metal, concrete, wood and expanding foam
- Re-screen foundation, gable and roof vents with heavy-gauge mesh
- Close gaps around pipes, cables and AC lines
- Remove droppings and nesting material, then sanitize
- Replace contaminated insulation if needed

How do rats get into my attic?
Usually through openings at the roof line: damaged vent screens, gaps at the eaves and spaces around chimney or plumbing pipes. Rodents can squeeze through openings smaller than an inch, so we inspect the attic, roof, crawl space and exterior.
What materials do you use to seal entry points?
Materials rodents can't chew through: galvanized steel mesh, sheet metal, concrete and wood. Expanding foam is used for small gaps and as a backer, not on its own.
Do you clean up droppings and damaged insulation?
Yes. We remove droppings and nesting material, sanitize the area, and can remove and replace contaminated insulation in the same visit.
Why are rodents worse in the fall and winter?
When the rain sets in and temperatures drop, rats and mice look for dry, warm shelter, and attics and crawl spaces are ideal. Sealing before the wet season is the best way to stay ahead of them.
